Clark Logic recently acquired P & P Transportation Services, Inc., one of the largest regional trucking companies in Southern Michigan - with 20 tractors, 95 trailers, and 35 total employees. Based in Three Rivers, P & P Transportation has offered unequaled customer service – and a spotless reputation for customer driven, on time delivery - for more than forty years.

P & P Transportation is a licensed common carrier with authority to haul goods anywhere in the United States, and is also a licensed freight broker with the authority to tender loads to other trucking companies.

PRESS RELEASE - 10/18/22

CONSTANTINE, MI — Clark Logic, an ever-growing transportation and warehousing staple in the area since 1969, has acquired P&P Transportation Services based in Constantine. The two companies share like cultures and P&P Transportation Services was founded in 1973 by Phil and Pam Hoffine. Clark Logic has grown at a rapid pace over the last few years and this latest acquisition is an ideal fit, as the two companies meld similar business missions, visions, and core values together.

"We are very excited to be blending our companies together to make for a stronger team," stressed Jamie Clark, President, and owner of Clark Logic. 'The Hoffine's have built a tremendous transportation company over some 50 years, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to bring their team on board at Clark Logic. We are going to make a talented team."

P&P Transportation Services hauls goods virtually anywhere in the United States and is a licensed freight broker with the authority to tender loads to other trucking companies. P&P Transportation Services like Clark Logic has offered excellent customer service and has a proven history of highly reputable business practices in the industry over the years.

"Bringing two winning team cultures together is what it' s all about," cited David Casterline, Chief Executive Officer at Clark Logic. "We are in the business of building people, not companies. When you take care of your people and do the right thing, the rest will take care of itself over the long run and your business will flourish."

Jamie Clark stressed the importance of adding P&P Transportation Services to expand its business offerings.

“The people at P&P Transportation Services are absolutely outstanding and this latest acquisition gives us the chance to broaden our scope of services by expanding our reach across the United States," noted Clark. "We are extremely proud and pleased to have joined our teams together to service our customers."

History of P & P Transportation

Phil Hoffine Trucking was started in 1973 with one truck and one trailer, primarily delivering agricultural products to mills in the local southwestern Michigan area. After a conversation with Pastor John at TRCF Church (now Riverside Church) in Three Rivers Michigan, P & P Transportation was incorporated in 1977 - named after Phil & Pam Hoffine.

P & P Transportation's first customer was Fibre Converters in Three Rivers Michigan. Since then the company has grown into one of the largest trucking companies in southern Michigan with 20 tractors, 95 trailers and 35 total employees.

P & P Transportation became a licensed common carrier with authority to haul goods anywhere in the United States in 1980, and is also a licensed freight broker with the authority to tender loads to other trucking companies.

"We’re in the service business, we don’t produce anything so what the customer wants the customer gets."

Optimizing Your Logistics Services’ Asset Utilization

Obviously, the end game when it comes to lean operations of any kind – including logistics – is to get more productivity out of fewer assets.

So if your logistics assets – such as vehicle fleets and storage facilities – are underutilized it signals inefficiency and means you are getting a poor return on investment. Changing the way your logistics assets are used, including whether they are owned or outsourced, can help resolve these inefficiencies and lead to lowered costs.

Run Fewer Vehicles More Often

Do all of your deliveries go out at the same time every day – such as first thing in the morning? This practice may actually require owning, operating and maintaining a larger fleet than necessary.  Rather than have all deliveries leave at the same time, which leaves trucks idle for the rest of the day, consider using fewer trucks and spreading deliveries out during the course of the entire day (and night!)

Many industries run 24/7 and are willing to take deliveries in the afternoon and evening. This enables you to get double or triple duty out of each vehicle, and results in the need for a smaller fleet.

trucking company

Pay Pallet Rate Not Truck Rate

If you outsource your delivery fleet, and your contracted rate structure is a “truck rate”, you are paying too much every time you send out a less-than-full truckload. Rather than pay a flat fee regardless of how full a truck is, consider negotiating a “pallet rate” with your outsourced logistics company.

This encourages the transport company to utilize their fleet more efficiently. And as fleet efficiency goes up, delivery costs to your business go down. As an added bonus, a more efficient fleet is better for the planet, too!

Clark Logic offers LDL (Less-Than-Truckload) pricing for shipments that do not require a full 48- or 53-foot trailer – saving you money without compromising delivery speed or reliability.

Outsource Peak Warehouse Needs

Many businesses, especially those in the manufacturing industry, experience peak times as well as dips in their production schedule. Everything from economic growth and decline cycles, to major holidays, can affect your company’s fluctuating storage needs.

Owning and operating sufficient warehouse capacity to accommodate peak production can mean low space utilization when operations are slower. When you outsource your warehousing and storage needs, you only pay for extra capacity when you need it, rather than for the entire year.

Kalamazoo\’s Best Logistics Services

The outsourced logistics solutions provided by CMS help ensure that you keep costs low by getting higher productivity out of fewer assets.

Outsourcing your supply chain transport and storage to a third party ensures access to the best equipment, the most advanced technologies and the most highly skilled labor – all at a fraction of what it would cost to “do it yourself.”

Lower your overall logistics costs, and improve your supply chain efficiency, with Clark Logic’s logistics services. Call us today to see how our third party logistics services can improve your company’s bottom line!

Studies show that more than eighty-five percent of businesses outsource some part of their supply chain operations. And the two functions that are most commonly outsourced by savvy business owners are warehousing and transport.

As Southwest Michigan’s leader in outsourced logistics services, Clark Logic can show you how to reduce costs as well as improve efficiency with third party supply chain solutions. Here are four reasons why smart companies outsource all or part of their supply chain logistics.

(1.) Outsourced Logistics are Scalable

If your operations are rapidly or suddenly expanding, outsourcing provides an effective means of immediately accessing more space, trucks, manpower or technology, with a simple phone call.

And should you experience a temporary or seasonal downturn in business, you are not left with idle staff to lay off, or stuck with depreciating unused equipment.

Simply put, outsourcing your company’s supply chain needs offers the ultimate flexibility in resourcing, as well as a more responsive variable cost structure.

Outsourced Logistics

(2.) Outsourced Logistics Allows You to Focus on Your Core Business

Many aspects of supply chain management create a distraction from your core business. For example, purchasing and maintaining trucks and trailers, as well as recruiting, screening and training drivers, can put a heavy burden on management and HR personnel alike.

When you outsource your logistics, these time-intensive tasks disappear, leaving your team members free to focus on what they do best.

(3.) Third Party Logistics Providers Have the Expertise

While you focus on your core competency, such as manufacturing quality parts, we focus on ours: logistics.

A full time logistics service provider will be much more efficient and skilled in performing certain transport, handling and storage services than your company’s “in-house” staff.

At CMS we understand the fastest and cheapest shipping methods, as well as how to manage special freight and storage issues – such as packaging, handling, and temperature control. As a result, our outsourced logistics solutions can help you store and deliver your freight faster, safer, cheaper and more efficiently.

(4.) Third Party Outsourced Logistics Save Money

Investing money in your own trucks and trailers, and/or purchasing real estate for warehousing, are huge costs that can decimate any budget. Why invest in expensive facilities and equipment when you can use a logistics provider’s state-of-the art warehouses and vehicles for a fraction of the cost of purchasing your own?

Add to that the savings realized by not having to hire, train, employ, insure, and provide benefits coverage for transport and storage workers – and you can see how third party logistics can lead to dramatic savings in both equipment expenditures as well as labor.

Kalamazoo’s Best Outsourced Logistics Services

Outsourcing your supply chain transport and storage to a third party ensures access to the best equipment, the most advanced technologies and the most highly skilled labor – all at a fraction of what it would cost to “do it yourself.”

Lower your overall logistics costs, and improve your supply chain efficiency, with Clark Logic’s outsourced logistics.

How to Lower Shipping Costs with Dimensional Weight Pricing

“Dimensional Weight Pricing” is a new trend in the shipping industry that sets the shipping price based on package volume as well as weight. A formula is used which calculates the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight.

In other words, this pricing method takes into account the exterior package size (i.e. the amount of space a package occupies when in the cargo area of the transport vehicle) in relation to its weight, to determine the shipping price. The dimensional weight calculation will apply if it the volume occupied is greater than the actual weight – which can result in a 20 to 30% increase in shipping costs.

The largest overnight delivery carriers (FedEx and UPS) announced in June 2014 that they would apply dimensional weight pricing to all shipments, effective January 2015. And as these giants go, generally so goes the shipping industry! So, what can shippers do to avoid the cost increases they are likely to see as a result of Dimensional Weight Pricing?

Obviously getting more goods into the same box will save a significant amount of parcel freight cost under the new Dimensional Weight Pricing. Identifying the optimal box size reduces the number of parcel deliveries, increases picker thru-put and minimizes the use of unnecessarily large boxes. But this is often easier said than done!

The “box picker” typically has to decide the optimal box size, manually – choosing from 200 to 300 pre-fabricated boxes – which consumes a great deal of time making it labor cost intensive. Additionally, many material handling systems are optimized to handle medium and large box sizes efficiently and Dimensional Weight Pricing calls for increased use of smaller box sizes with more products placed in a given box.

The answer to meet these changes in the shipping industry is state-of-the-art parcel box optimization technology to ensure as many items are placed in a box as possible and that the optimal box size is selected.  Advanced and executional cartonizing results in quantifiable reduction in parcel delivery cost, increased labor efficiencies and precise dimensional pricing.

Using box optimization technology has demonstrated up to 15 percent improvement in box utilization, 40 percent cost avoidance, 20-30 percent improvement in pick/pack labor efficiencies and a reduction in carbon footprint by using less corrugate.

To put it simply: right technologies = the right box for the right product(s) = the right price.

If you are in a consumer industry and aren’t yet affected by Dimensional Weight Pricing you soon will be. But not to worry! With 45 years of logistics expertise, the shipping experts at Clark Logic understand and are prepared for these (and any) changes in the shipping industry that may affect your bottom.

When you ship with us, we can help you analyze your supply chain to improve labor efficiencies and avoid cost increases associated with Dimensional Weight Pricing. We help you estimate the actual delivery cost for your customer and calculate the exact dimensional weight price. We can also assist in identifying the most appropriate boxes to use as well as how many pieces can fit in the box.

Letting Clark Logic’s logistics experts help you identify the right products for the right box at the right price provides an intelligent and easy way to avoid cost increases associated with Dimensional Weight Pricing.

With 45 years of logistics experience, Clark Logic ensures that our customers understand what insurance coverage is necessary before they ever need to make a claim. Here’s a brief rundown on some of the cargo insurance basics that every business should understand.

Primary Insurance vs Contingent Insurance

Lost or damaged goods may be covered under more than one policy – such as your carrier’s insurance and your freight broker’s insurance. The primary insurance is the insurance plan that the claim will be covered under first.

The contingent insurance comes into effect only if the primary insurance plan does not cover the damages. A freight broker or shipper will often carry contingent insurance in case the primary insurance has expired and/or doesn’t cover full value.

Liability Insurance vs Open Cargo Insurance

If your carrier is covered under liability insurance and your freight is damaged, your carrier’s insurance will cover whatever he is legally / contractually responsible for. Carrier’s liability insurance often contractually compensates on a price per pound, but this usually does not cover the true and full value of the damaged goods.

Open Cargo Insurance – also called Shipper’s Interest Insurance may be held by a carrier, freight broker, or by the shipper themselves. This type of policy covers the shipper, for the actual value of the lost or damaged goods.

A shipper should always understand if they are taking the risk of being paid a lower amount than the actual value of their goods in the event of a claim, by relying solely on the carrier’s liability insurance. And a shipper should always weigh the option of Shipper’s Interest Insurance if they are uncomfortable with the risk of having only the carriers Liability Insurance.

Total Loss, Basic Risk, & All Risk

Total Loss Coverage does not mean the same thing as “total coverage.” Total Loss Coverage will only cover you if your entire shipment is a total loss. In other words, it will not cover partial losses. The types of events that you are covered for vary by insurance provider and policy. This type of insurance is typically only used for low value cargo.

Basic Risk Coverage insurance will cover you for both partial and total losses of your shipment – but only if they are the result of one or more of the specific risks listed in your insurance policy. Coverage can vary greatly from policy to policy.

All Risk Cargo Insurance is the most comprehensive form of cargo insurance. This type of policy will cover you for any losses or damages from any external source – with only a few exception which will be stated in your policy.

If this sounds complicated – it is! Insuring your valuable cargo against loss or damage is one of the most important aspects of your transportation needs, and yet it is one that many carriers and shippers do not understand. At Clark Logic we have 45 years of logistics experience that include guaranteeing our customers’ goods are properly insured.

When you rely on Clark Logic every effort is exerted to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of your products.
